The smart phone market is set to get a new entrant and the entrant is coming from one of the most unlikely sources.
This is because Amazon, an electronic commerce company, which has not been known to produce gadgets in the past, is set to unveil its first own-brand Smartphone.
Partnering with GBR Corporations, an international manufacturer of machinery, Amazon released pictures of the device in mid-April and is set to unveil it in early summer.
While the design shares semblance with several existing smart phones, including Apple’s iPhone, Samsung’s Galaxy S lineup, and even the HTC One, which has a polished, chamfered bezel, the device features specs including a 4.7-inch display with 720p HD resolution, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a RAM of 2GB, six individual camera modules and a highly customized version of Google’s Android operating system.
The first Amazon smartphone will also feature a novel interface with 3D effects enabled by four front-facing infrared cameras that track the position of the owner’s head in relation to the device’s screen. Coupled with some additional sensors, these cameras also facilitate unique gesture-based controls used to access menus and additional information.
Another key selling point of the device is a special data plan that Amazon refers to as “Prime Data.” While it is still unclear exactly what Prime Data will offer, there are suggestions that the phone could be an AT&T exclusive, and Prime Data may be a monthly data package that includes a certain amount of Prime video and music streaming that will attract little or no charges.
Although the device is relatively large, it is said to be reasonably comfortable with the use of one hand.
