A federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the Federal Government, the Nigerian Police and the State Security Service, SSS, to release the passport of Lamido Sanusi, the suspended CBN Governor, and pay him N50m as exemplary damages for unlawfully seizing his passport and detaining him illegally.
The presiding judge, Justice Ibrahim Buba, also ordered the respondents to issue a public apology as he described the arrest and detention of Sanusi as “unlawful, an harassment, and intimidation.”
Sanusi was arrested, detained, and had his travel passport forcefully withdrawn by SSS officials on February 20, 2014.
The court dismissed the allegation of terrorism financing levied against the former CBN governor, stating it was a discordant tune sung as an afterthought.
Sanusi was exonerated, as the respondents have no material to back the allegation that he was actually financing terrorism.
