The UK Foreign Office has advised British citizens in Abuja to maintain “heightened vigilance” following the foiled jailbreak at the headquarters of the Department of State Services (DSS) on Sunday, March 30.
This advice was issued via the revised travel alert on Nigeria posted on the Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO) website on Sunday.
The UK Foreign Office updated the alert few hours after the DSS confirmed that it had foiled an attempted jailbreak by Boko Haram insurgents detained at the Asokoro headquarters of the security outfit.
So far, 21 persons were said to have died in the gun battle, which started in the early hours of Sunday. The travel alert advised British citizens to be especially vigilant should they need to go to Asokoro or the Three Arms Zone in Abuja.
Although the statement clarified that the incident was brought under control swiftly, and the Nigerian Government has now confirmed that the incident was over and declared the area safe, the foreign office still went on to “recommend that British citizens should maintain heightened vigilance in Abuja, particularly after dark, and be especially vigilant should there be a need for them to go to Asokoro or the Three Arms Zone.”
