15-Year-Old Maid Rescued After Allegedly Being Locked in Toilet for Months in Rivers
The teenager was reportedly rescued by police after neighbours heard her cries for help, as the alleged abuse sparks outrage and renewed calls for stronger protection of child domestic workers in Nigeria.
A 15-year-old girl from Ebonyi State, identified as Amarachi, has been rescued after she was allegedly kept locked inside a toilet for months at the home where she worked as a domestic help in Abuloma, Rivers State.
The teenager was reportedly employed as a housemaid by a couple identified as Eze Simeon and his wife.
According to reports surrounding the incident, Amarachi was allegedly confined to the toilet as punishment for an unspecified offence. She was also said to have been severely neglected during the period, including allegedly being given food only once a day and surviving largely on leftovers.
Her ordeal reportedly came to light after the couple left their residence. Neighbours allegedly heard the teenager crying out for help and alerted the police at the Abuloma Police Division.
Police officers subsequently responded to the distress call, rescued the teenager and took the couple into custody for questioning.
The police spokesperson, Agabe Blessing, confirmed the incident and said investigations were ongoing.
Amarachi’s family has reportedly travelled from Ebonyi State to Rivers State to take custody of her following the rescue.
Video footage circulating online shows the teenager, dressed in red, being escorted away after she was freed from the residence.
The case has triggered outrage on social media, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the treatment of children working as domestic helpers and calling for stronger measures to protect minors from exploitation and abuse.
Cases involving alleged abuse of child domestic workers have previously attracted attention in different parts of Nigeria, including Delta and Lagos states, raising broader concerns about the vulnerability of children placed in private homes as domestic workers.
As police continue their investigation, attention is expected to focus on the circumstances surrounding Amarachi’s employment, her alleged confinement and the treatment she received while in the couple’s care.
The incident has also renewed calls for parents, guardians, recruitment agents and authorities to exercise greater caution when placing children in domestic employment and to ensure that their safety, welfare and basic rights are protected.
