Many people view hemp as simply a psychoative plant that may affect the mind of users if overdone but that is not all there is to the plant. It can also serve as food to man as its fibers, seeds and oil can be put to different uses. The seeds, for instance, have high nutritional value as they can be sterilised, toasted, roasted, or cracked.
The health benefits of hemp seeds is seen in the fact that it helps in strengthening the immune system, thereby stemming disease attack, apart from its role of helping to excrete toxins from the body. Research has shown that “consuming hemp seeds whether raw or in oil form, has the capacity to aid in the healing process of diseases related to immune deficiency,” as “there is no other food substance which contains such high quantities of essential fatty acids found in hemp seeds, higher than even flaxseed and other nut or seed oil as well as containing high amounts of vitamin E and trace minerals.” Also not to be overlooked is its protein content.
Often confused with marijuana, hemp is different. Though hemp and marijuana share the same family root, they are different, as seen in their level of THC, or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol. While hemp contains less than 1 per cent of psychoactive drug, marijuana boasts about 20 per cent.
