Burkina Faso has released a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) crew that was earlier detained following an emergency landing in the country, Nigerian authorities confirmed on Thursday, bringing a swift end to a potentially delicate diplomatic situation.

The military aircraft had made an unscheduled landing in Bobo-Dioulasso after developing a technical fault, compounded by issues related to airspace entry documentation. The development initially raised concerns but was quickly addressed through diplomatic engagement between both countries.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, travelled to Ouagadougou for high-level talks with Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré. During the meeting, Tuggar conveyed the regrets and goodwill of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reaffirming Nigeria’s respect for Burkina Faso’s sovereignty and regional security efforts. He also praised the Burkinabè government’s role in counter-terrorism operations across the Sahel.

Sources familiar with the discussions described the talks as cordial and constructive, leading to the resolution of the matter without escalation. The detained Nigerian Air Force personnel were subsequently released and returned safely to Nigeria on Thursday.

Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining strong bilateral relations and working together to promote peace and stability across the region.
