Controversial Catholic Bishop Resigns

The controversial Bishop of Limburg, Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst has resigned. The Vatican made the notice of acceptance of the resignation of Tebartz-van Elst whose reckless spending on renovations for his personal residence enraged his congregation and ran against the Pope’s message of humility and modesty for the Roman Catholic Church.

The Vatican said, “The Holy See accepted the German bishop’s offer to resign given that it has come to a situation in the Limburg diocese that prevents Tebartz-van Elst from fruitfully carrying out his duties.”

The diocese admitted in October 2013 that the 54-year-old Bishop had lavished about $43 million, on the renovation of his residence and church buildings.

The Vatican who said the bishop would be assigned another position in the church, refused to provide more details on the nature of his new assignment.

Germany’s bishops and Lay groups applauded the Pope for receiving the resignation as an important recognition of the discontent felt by many in the German pews who view the Catholic Church as being out of touch with the reality of their lives and concerns.
