A wave of confusion swept across Nigerian social media this week following widespread claims that TikTok had “banned” late-night live streaming for users in the country.

A fact-check by our newsroom confirms that while TikTok indeed restricted access to its LIVE feature at night, the move was temporary and not a full ban on the platform.

According to multiple credible reports, many Nigerian creators received an in-app notification from TikTok late on Sunday, indicating that the LIVE feature had been “temporarily limited during late-night hours” as part of an ongoing safety investigation. Users were unable to go live or view live broadcasts between roughly 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., with the platform displaying a “No Access” message.

The restriction, TikTok said, was aimed at protecting users and addressing a surge in content flagged for adult and sexually explicit material — a growing concern within Nigeria’s creator community. The temporary suspension affected not only creators who met the eligibility threshold for LIVE but also everyday users attempting to watch live streams, including those from outside the country.

Reports indicate that normal access to LIVE was restored the following morning, further confirming that the measure was not a permanent action or a nationwide ban.

Digital safety analysts say TikTok appears to be tightening its enforcement of community guidelines in response to an increase in late-night streams violating its rules on sexual exploitation, nudity, and underage safety. The platform has not yet issued a detailed public statement beyond the in-app notice.

For now, Nigerian users can access the LIVE feature during daytime and evening hours, while monitoring continues on whether TikTok will reintroduce similar restrictions in the coming days.
