The Federal Government has declared Thursday, December 25 and Friday, December 26, 2025, as well as Thursday, January 1, 2026, as public holidays to mark the Christmas, Boxing Day, and New Year celebrations.

The declaration is in line with Nigeria’s annual festive calendar and is intended to allow citizens across the country to fully observe the season of celebration, reflection, and goodwill with their families and communities.

December 25 will be observed as Christmas Day, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, while December 26 marks Boxing Day, traditionally associated with charity and sharing. January 1, 2026, will be observed as New Year’s Day, ushering in the new calendar year.

The Federal Government encouraged Nigerians to use the holiday period to promote peace, unity, and harmony, while also urging caution and responsibility, especially in travel and public gatherings.

With the declaration, government offices, schools, and most businesses nationwide are expected to shut down on the affected dates and resume normal activities after the holidays.
