Some yet unknown gunmen who made an unsuccessful raid on the country home of Seriake Dickson, a former Bayelsa State Governor in Toru-Orua, Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State on Wednesday night ended up killing a police inspector who kept guard at the place.
In a statement by the Bayelsa State Police Public Relations Officer, Asinim Butswat, the Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa State, Mike Okoli, has visited the place and promised to do everything possible to track down the attackers.
Butswat said the deceased was the leader of the police guards at the former governor’s home located off River Forcados, through where the attackers came.
The PPRO, who did not give the name of the deceased inspector, said the body has been deposited in a mortuary.
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has in the meantime, condemned the attack. In a statement by his Chief Press secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, Diri said it was unthinkable that an illustrious son of Bayelsa and the Ijaw nation as Dickson could be the target of such an attack.
The governor commiserated with the family of the police officer and extended his condolences to the Inspector General of Police and the police authorities over the loss.
Fidelis Soriwei, the Chief Press Secretary to the former governor, said Dickson and his family were not at home when the incident occurred.
He said Dickson has condoled with the immediate family of the late police officer, the Inspector General of Police, the Bayelsa State Commissioner of police and the entire police team on the death of the gallant policeman.
Dickson, who is a candidate in the December 5thsenatorial election for Bayelsa West, called on his supporters across the Ijaw nation to give relevant information to the police to aid their investigation into the crime.
