Ibadan witnessed a historic and colourful ceremony on May 23, 2025, as Hon. Akin Alabi, prominent entrepreneur, politician, and federal lawmaker representing Egbeda/Ona-Ara Federal Constituency, was officially conferred with the revered chieftaincy title of Jagun Olubadan of Ibadanland.
The event, which took place at the Palace of the Olubadan, attracted a high-powered delegation from the National Assembly, traditional leaders, and notable dignitaries from across Nigeria.
Hon. Alabi and his wife made a grand entrance into the palace, where they were welcomed with traditional rites, music, and the rich cultural pageantry Ibadan is known for.
The Deputy Whip of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ibrahim Isiaka, was on ground to represent the Speaker of the House.
Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, Hon. Abubakar Bichi, also graced the occasion. Hon. Usman Banye led a delegation of 30 lawmakers from Abuja, while other members already in Ibadan joined in the celebration, showing overwhelming support for their colleague.
Hon. Akin Alabi, who has represented Egbeda/Ona-Ara since 2019, is well known for his achievements in business, philanthropy, and public service. The title of Jagun Olubadan is a significant step within the Ibadan traditional leadership structure and reflects his growing stature in the community.
“This is not just a title—it’s a responsibility and a call to do more for Ibadanland,” Hon. Alabi said in a brief remark during the event.
The conferment sparked excitement on social media, with videos and photos trending under hashtags celebrating the honour. As drums beat and praise singers echoed his name, Ibadan stood still for the man many now call Jagun Olubadan.
It was, indeed, a day to remember. Oye amori!
