Amid rising food costs across Nigeria, activist Just Adetoun has issued a stark warning about growing desperation among Nigerians, blaming the ruling APC for focusing on 2027 election preparations while citizens “can’t even afford to eat.”

Her outburst went viral following her shock after buying a single bag of pepper for ₦55,000, nearly as much as the monthly ₦70,000 minimum wage.

“How can someone earning 70k buy pepper for 55k?” she lamented emphatically on X.
Adetoun’s comments have struck a nerve amid ongoing economic hardship characterised by double-digit inflation and dwindling purchasing power.

With staple foods becoming prohibitively expensive, her critique underscores a growing frustration among Nigerians, questioning how low-income families can survive under current economic conditions.

She also took aim at the APC, accusing the party of concentrating on future political elections instead of addressing urgent issues such as hunger, poverty, and everyday survival for millions.

“There’s a serious problem in Nigeria right now,” she declared, warning that political grandstanding must not continue while millions struggle on a daily basis.

Many users echoed her sentiments, calling for immediate government action to stabilise prices, increase food production, and raise wages in line with the cost of living.

Economists and consumer advocates are urging reform of the country’s agricultural and food supply systems—including subsidies for farmers, improved storage facilities, and more support for local production—to reduce reliance on imports, which have exacerbated inflation amid a weak naira.

As Nigerians voice their concerns and pressure grows on the government to act, Just Adetoun’s raw and resonant plea shines a spotlight on the harsh realities millions of Nigerians face.

Can the APC hit pause on future campaigning to fix today’s crisis? For many, the answer needs to be a resolute “yes.”
