Lagos Launches Neighbourhood Safety Corps

[ctt template=”5″ link=”b40y4″ via=”no” ]The Neighbourhood Safety Corps is not in any way in competition with the regular Police Force.[/ctt]As part of measures to improve security in Lagos State, the state government today launched the Neighbourhood Safety Corps, a scheme targeted at community policing and meant to complement the effort of the Nigerian police in the state. It was a follow-up to the bill signed into law on August 15, 2016, by Akinwumi Ambode, Lagos State governor, creating the Neighbourhood Safety Corps.
Ambode, at the unveiling of the scheme in Agege Stadium, announced that cars and state of the art equipment have been made available to the Corp members to boost their work. This includes a total of 177 Salon Cars and vehicles equipped with necessary communication gadgets, 377 motorcycles, 377 helmets, 4,000 bicycles and metal detectors.

While praising the Nigerian police for the good work they have done fighting crime in the state, the ever growing population of the state, he said required that more hands be brought on board to complement their effort. “Let me, however, make it abundantly clear that the Neighbourhood Safety Corps is not in any way in competition with the regular Police Force. In actual fact, they are expected to assist and complement the Police by providing useful intelligence for crime prevention and to facilitate the arrest of perpetrators of criminal activities in our communities,” Ambode said. He added that in the realisation of the administration’s goal, the enlisted members of the Corps have been trained and equipped with the requisite knowledge and skills for the work at hand. The governor further said that “Special hotlines have also been created direct to the Executive Secretary and senior management of the Neighbourhood Safety Corps Agency for easy communication” with the communities in the event of any crime, and that “any valuable information given to the Corps will attract handsome rewards from the State Government.” He, therefore, enjoined all Lagosians to join hands with the state government to combat crime in the state.
Through this initiative, over “7,000 jobs” is said to have been created by the Lagos State government.
