Chukwuemeka Kanu, a lawyer, has launched the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GEJ FC, a new football club in Abuja.
While speaking with journalists about the development, Kanu said the registration of GEJ FC was done by enthusiasts of the President, who decided to float the team in appreciation of the efforts of the present administration in the development of sports in the country.
The club is set to compete in the 2014/2015 season of the Nigeria Nationwide League, NNL.
Kanu, who commended the president’s efforts on sports development, said the new football club would serve as a sustainable means of livelihood for many youths.
“Going by the support of the President for sports development, many young Nigerians have been provided with job opportunities, with the advent of the GEJ FC, more talented youths would have sustainable means of livelihood,” Kanu said.
While stating that the team would recruit players from all the six geo-political zones, Kanu said the football club would also set up academies and training camps in these zones.
“We are determined to guide the GEJ FC to the elite division as soon as we start from the nationwide league season of 2014/2015. Already the team is registered with the NFF and for a start we are going to have 25 players who will be the pioneer players and I want to assure you that this team will measure up against any other of its kind anywhere in the world,” Kanu said.
Although it is not clear if there is any relationship between them, but it would be recalled that one Daniel Kanu, created the Youth Earnestly Ask for Abacha group and organised the 3 million man March in support of the ambition of the late General Sani Abacha to transmute into a democratically elected President in 1998.
