Nigeria has achieved a remarkable milestone in global academic competitions after Team Nigeria emerged champions in the Middle School Group Category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, China.

The Nigerian team defeated competitors from across the world to claim the prestigious Gold Award, delivering a historic performance on the international stage during the country’s debut appearance at the competition.

The four-member team comprised Oluwadamilola Adeolu of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti; Abdurrahman Yusuf and Maryam Yusuf of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin; and Chinedu Okediachi of Madonna International Schools, Asaba.

The Nigeria Spelling Bee announced the victory, celebrating the young scholars for their outstanding performance and for bringing global recognition to Nigeria’s education sector.

“Team Nigeria has won the Gold Award in the Middle School Group Category at the Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, China,” the organisers announced.

Ar-Raheem International College also confirmed the achievement, revealing that its students Maryam Yusuf and Abdurrahman Yusuf delivered exceptional performances during the final rounds of the competition.

The victory represents a major breakthrough for Nigeria’s participation in international spelling competitions and highlights the growing strength of young Nigerian talents in academic fields.

Among the brightest stars of the team’s success is 14-year-old Maryam Yusuf, a niqab-wearing student whose journey has captured widespread attention and admiration across Nigeria.

Maryam had already established herself as one of the country’s most promising spelling talents after an impressive performance at the African Spelling Bee Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe. Competing in the senior category despite being a JSS 3 student, she correctly spelled 17 out of 20 words in just one minute during the speed round, helping Nigeria secure a second-place finish in the team category.
