The clampdown on drug traffickers by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA) Edo State Command, has recorded huge success with the arrest of 262 suspected drug traffickers and seizure of 15,253.82kg of narcotics including cannabis, cocaine, heroin and tramadol in the out-gone year, 2020. This comprises 180 males, and 82 females.
Speaking on the activities of the Command in the year under review, the State Commander, Buba Wakawa disclosed that 10 vehicles used in smuggling illicit drugs were also impounded while 15 cannabis plantations measuring 11.82 hectares were identified and destroyed. Wakawa said 86 drug-dependent persons were successfully counseled and reunited with their families.

According to the commander, eight drug traffickers were however convicted while 220 cases were pending at the Federal High Court as at December 31, 2020. Wakawa said the command recorded these achievements despite the COVID-19 lockdown and the End-SARS protest that led to the destruction of the State Command’s headquarters.
The commander disclosed the various modes of drug concealment adopted by drug barons which include use of silos, underground tunnels, cannabis warehouses as well as false compartments in trucks, buses and car
Wakawa thanked Governor Godwin Obaseki for his prompt response in providing a temporary accommodation for the Command following the destruction of tits headquarters in Benin City during the End-SARS protest in October last year.
He expressed optimism that the command would perform better in reducing the problem of drug trafficking and abuse in the State this new year.
