The Federal Ministry of Environment has raised an urgent alarm over the risk of flooding across seven states and 25 communities in Nigeria, warning that heavy rains forecast within the next 48 hours could trigger widespread damage.

The ministry noted that vulnerable states include Benue, Borno, Gombe, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Niger, and Yobe, where several riverine and low-lying communities are already on edge due to rising water levels. In Benue, areas such as Makurdi, Otukpo, Gbajimba, and surrounding settlements face heightened danger, while parts of Borno, including Dikwa and Briyel, have also been flagged. Gombe town and nearby Nafada have been listed as potential hotspots, alongside riverine zones in Kebbi such as Jega and Kamba. Nasarawa communities including Keana and Rukubi are also at risk, with Niger’s Lapai and Yobe’s Potiskum and Gashua added to the high-alert watchlist.

Authorities warn that the situation is particularly severe along the River Niger floodplain stretching from Jebba to Lokoja, where water levels have been steadily rising. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has urged residents in these areas to be prepared for immediate evacuation should conditions worsen.

Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood & Coastal Zone Management Department, called on local and state authorities to activate contingency plans to prevent avoidable loss of lives and property. Similarly, NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, instructed zonal offices to intensify awareness campaigns, strengthen collaboration with state and local emergency agencies, and ensure rapid response measures are in place.

Residents across the affected regions are advised to remain vigilant, clear blocked waterways, secure their belongings, and avoid low-lying areas, especially at night. The ministry emphasized that early action is crucial in minimizing the destructive impact of the anticipated floods.
