Nigeria Needs God-fearing leaders – FUNAAB VC

Activities marking the 21st and 22nd convocation ceremonies of the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta, FUNAAB, Ogun State, has commenced.

Slated to hold from June 15 to June 21, 2014, activities for the convocation ceremonies commenced on June 15, with a Jumat service as well as an interdenominational church service.

At the Jumat service held at the university mosque, Olusola Oyewole, the Vice-Chancellor, VC, stressed the need for the nation to have God-fearing leaders that could turn things around positively, noting that with good leaders and followers alike, the country was bound to achieve greatness.

The VC also commended the Muslim community leaders in the university, stating that it was a big responsibility to manage a large congregation such as that of FUNAAB. “We are building lives to make heaven I do not think we should depend on outsiders to build the house of God for us,” he stated.

Oyewole disclosed that through the grace of God, the university had been able to achieve a lot in the last two years.

Idris Ayinde, chief Imam of FUNAAB Muslim community, while delivering his sermon charged the graduating students to be good ambassadors, stating that graduates of the university have excelled in their chosen fields both nationally and internationally.

In furtherance, the interdenominational church service was held at the Chapel of Grace Sanctuary. Oyewole also thanked members of the university community for their prayers and commitments in the last two years. He however made a prophetic declaration that the next three years of his administration would be a turning point as the university is destined to become a reference point among ivory towers. He promised that he would remain a child of God by keeping His ordinances.

Christian Obi,chaplain of the chapel in his sermon titled, “I will reach my goal” charged members of the university community to unite for the common goal of making FUUNAB great.

The remaining events lined up for the convocation ceremonies include; the convocation press conference, open day and parents’ forum, sporting competitions, the Research and Agricultural Fair and Heroes day of recognition and excellence.

The convocation lecture titled, “Leadership, Economic Nationalism and Development: Nigeria and the Challenge from the Global South,” holds on Friday, June 20 at the FUNAAB ceremonial auditorium. It will be delivered by Ayodeji Olukoju, a fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Letters and the Vice Chancellor, Caleb University, Lagos State.
