Okpebholo Begins Probe of Obaseki, Sends Letter to House of Assembly to Investigate Two Controversial Projects

The Edo State House of Assembly is soon to set up an a committee that will investigate two controversial projects initiated by the immediate past governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki. The probe of the two projects – the Radisson Blu Hotel and the Museum of West African Art, (MOWAA) was at the request of the state government as conveyed in a letter addressed to the Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku. Recall that Governor Okpebholo had while reacting to his Thursday July10, 2025, Supreme Court victory, vowed to probe Obaseki’s eight-year stewardship. He had declared on Friday, July 11, that “We will set up a Commission of Inquiry to look into the books and dealings of the previous administration. We will open interrogation to check their records. “They have finished fighting us, and now I am ready to fight back and ensure that all those that cheated Edo people in the last eight years are all brought to book,” The Speaker of the House, Blessing Agbebaku, who at plenary on Monday, directed the Clerk of the House, Audu Omogbai, to read the letter from the state government signed by the secretary to the state government, Musa Umar Ikhilor, announced that an ad hoc committee would be constituted at the next sitting to investigate the affected projects. Also, the Assembly received another letter from Governor Okpebholo, requesting the screening and confirmation of nominees for appointment into the Edo State Judicial Service Commission. The Speaker referred the request to the House Committee on Judiciary with instructions to report back promptly. Meanwhile, the House passed for second reading a bill seeking to repeal the Edo State Private Health Facility (Prohibition) Law of 1984 and to establish the Edo Healthcare Regulation and Monitoring Agency (EDOHERMA) to regulate healthcare facilities across the state. In another development, the Assembly felicitated the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, on his birthday and ninth coronation anniversary.
