Making good his promise to make the welfare of students his priority, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Professor Edoba Bright Omoregie, senior advocate of Nigeria, (SAN) said he had met with officials of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, (NELFUND) to discuss the prospect of getting more students at the University enrolled into the scheme.
Professor Omoregie, who disclosed this on Wednesday, decried what he described as the current abysmal enrolment figures from the university and appealed for opportunities for more beneficiaries.
Recall that in his inaugural speech, Prof Omoregie had commended the federal government’s initiative which he said he alongside some other scholars had advocated before its establishment and promised to encourage the students to key into the scheme.
The Executive Director, Operations of NELFUND, Mustapha Iyal, who in the company of other officials, received the Vice Chancellor, congratulated him for his well-deserved appointment.
Iyal identified inadequate sensitisation and doubt about the authenticity of the fund as primary reasons for the low enrolment but expressed readiness of the scheme to include as many students at the University as possible only if they applied and met the guidelines.
Omoregie told journalists in Benin on Wednesday that he would visit other organisations as part of his networking agenda for the University.
