Reports from Ondo state where the off-season governorship election is being held today indicate that the exercise so far is going on without a hitch. Materials arrived early in most of the areas where reports have been filled in. And with the exception of the arrest of someone said to have been caught with two bags of cash in Akure, the state capital, no sharp practice has been reported by 10:00 am.
Ad-hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC arrived with the relevant materials as early as 6:50 am in Karibo, the hometown of Agboola Ajayi, candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP in the Ese-Odo local government area of the state.
Similar report came in from the area of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the man who, having completed the tenure of his late principal, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu, is now fighting to get his mandate from the people. He voted shortly before this report was filed. Aiyedatiwa has two major opponents, one of who is Ajayi, incidentally his predecessor as deputy governor under Akeredolu.
In Akure, at ward 4, polling unit 007, within the area of St. Stephens Primary School, around 9:00 am men of the Directorate of State Service, DSS arrested an unnamed man with two bags of cash. They suspect that he intended to use it to influence voters. He was taken away.
