The death occurred hours after Governor Akeredolu announced that he [the governor] had tested positive to the virus. The governor had said that he was asymptomatic and would work from home following all measures prescribed by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC. Though Akeredolu announced his status, it was not made known to the public that the deceased commissioner for health was [at any time before his death] receiving treatment for the disease. A source was said to have claimed that he started by treating himself, being a medical doctor.
Adegbenro’s case is another high-profile death after that of Abba Kyari, chief of staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, as well as notable politicians. Former governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi and Adebayo Oshinowo, a senator representing Lagos State died of the pandemic last month.
