In what could be the most significant political development since the 2023 general elections, key opposition leaders including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Nasir El-Rufai, and Kashim Ibrahim-Imam held an expanded high-level meeting in Abuja on May 25, 2025, fueling speculation of a powerful coalition aimed at unseating the ruling APC in 2027.

Photos and videos from the event have gone viral on social media, triggering massive online conversations. Political watchers described the gathering as a “coalition of veterans,” citing the combined electoral weight and nationwide influence of the figures involved.

While some critics labeled the coalition as “dead on arrival,” pointing to the age and previous roles of its key actors, supporters argue that the combined votes of Atiku and Obi from the 2023 elections still hold strong electoral capital. The coalition committee, though yet to finalise a party platform, appears determined to forge a united front by 2027.

Sources at the event revealed that extensive deliberations took place behind closed doors, with discussions centred on creating a unified political movement to challenge the APC’s dominance, particularly under President Tinubu’s administration.

A key coalition insider stated:
“Those who thought this was impossible are in for a shock. The groundwork has been laid, and the coalition is real.”

Despite individual ambitions—Obi’s Labour Party loyalty, Atiku’s PDP stance, and El-Rufai’s rumored SDP alignment—analysts believe a common objective may yet drive them to consolidate forces under a singular, strategic platform.

The coalition reportedly includes regional leaders as follows:

Atiku Abubakar – North-East

David Mark – North-Central

Peter Obi – South-East

Rotimi Amaechi – South-South

Nasir El-Rufai – North-West

Rauf Aregbesola – South-West

As Nigerians await the final shape of the coalition, one thing is certain: the race for 2027 has officially begun—and the APC may be in for its toughest battle yet.
