Rivers State Government has alleged that the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, has hatched plans to carry out a smear media campaign against the Governor, Nyesom Wike.

According to the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Paulinus Nsirim, the plot includes the use of select media houses in the state to denigrate the governor.

In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Thursday, Nsirim said the purpose of the campaign is to undermine the “intimidating sterling performance of Governor Wike in infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, rural transformation, housing development, administration of justice, social welfare and sports development.”

He alleged that at the head of the campaign is a former Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Dakuku Peterside, who ran for governor in 2015 against Wike.

“However, the uncommon transformation of the 23 Local Government Areas as witnessed during the last six years of projects commissioning and flag off shows clearly that Governor Wike is actually meeting the yearnings of the people,” the commissioner said.

He said Wike had continued to impress the people with his performance contrary to the expectation by the opposition that he would not find the resources to execute projects and pay salaries when he took office in 2015.

“No matter how hard these detractors push their propaganda, Governor Wike will never be distracted in executing his social contract with the people of Rivers State. In the next few weeks, more projects that have a direct bearing on the lives of Rivers people will be unveiled.

“Rather than launder the thoroughly battered image of the APC, media appearances by Dr. Dakuku Peterside and his cohorts will further expose APC’s penchant for lies and deception which is now public knowledge.”

Peterside had accused Wike of awarding contracts for the construction of the internal roads in his village for N3.5 billion after a company he allegedly had an interest in failed to do the same roads in a contract previously awarded by the Niger Delta Development Commission.
