The federal government, following a protracted negotiation, has agreed to pay the N30,000 earlier agreed at the tripartite committee meeting chaired by Amma Pepple.
The agreement reached late Monday has softened the hard stance by government which got an injunction restraining labour from embarking on the strike planned strike. Therefore the initial stand of the federal government and the state governments that the new minimum wage would be between N22,500 and N24,000 has been jettisoned. Chris Ngige, minister of Labour and
employment has also dropped his argument that the suggestion of state governors may be upheld. Labour, which earlier submitted a demand for N52,500 had insisted that it will not be persuaded to go below N30,000. The new figure as contained in the committee report will be presented to President Muhammadu Buhari at the villa Tuesday by 4:15 pm.
Nigerian Labour Congress has therefore announced late Monday it was suspending the nationwide strike scheduled to begin on Tuesday.
