President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Super Eagles of Nigeria following their emphatic 4–1 victory over Gabon in the FIFA World Cup qualifying Africa playoff on Thursday — a win that secured Nigeria’s place in the playoff final.

The Super Eagles will now face either Cameroon or DR Congo on Sunday, November 16th, at 8 PM, in what will be a decisive clash for a ticket to the 2026 World Cup holding in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

The match also marked a major personal milestone for star striker Victor Osimhen, who scored and assisted in the victory, becoming Nigeria’s second all-time top scorer with:

31 goals 12 assists in 45 appearances

Osimhen is now six goals away from equalling the legendary Rashidi Yekini’s record as Nigeria’s highest goal scorer.

In a statement released after the match, President Tinubu praised the team’s spirit and urged them to remain fully focused as they approach the final hurdle.

“The Super Eagles have shown resilience, determination, and unity. I urge them to remain resolute and finish the job on Sunday. Nigeria is behind them all the way,” the President said.

Fans across the country have expressed renewed optimism as Nigeria edges closer to qualifying for the global tournament after a tense playoff campaign.

The upcoming match on Sunday is expected to draw massive nationwide attention as the Super Eagles seek to secure their seventh World Cup appearance.
