President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reconstitution of the Board of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), following the confirmation of its members by the Senate on December 16, 2025.
The reconstitution, announced in a State House press release on press release dated December 18, 2025, and signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, is in line with the provisions of the Electricity Act, 2023, and is aimed at deepening reforms in Nigeria’s power sector. According to the release, Dr Mulisiu Olalekan Oseni has been appointed Chairman of the Commission.
Dr Oseni, who began his service at NERC as a Commissioner in January 2017 and later served as Vice Chairman, assumed office as Chairman on December 1, 2025.
His tenure will run until the completion of his 10-year term, as stipulated by law.
Dr Yusuf Ali was appointed Vice Chairman of the Commission. He was first appointed as a Commissioner in February 2022, and his designation as Vice Chairman took effect from December 1, 2025, and will subsist until the end of his first term.
Other members of the reconstituted board include Mr Nathan Rogers Shatti, who is serving a second term as Commissioner, having first been appointed in January 2017, and Mr Dafe Akpeneye, also serving a second term after his initial appointment in January 2017.
Aisha Mahmud Kanti Bello is likewise serving a second term as Commissioner, following her first appointment in December 2020. Dr Chidi Ike, first appointed in February 2022, is serving his first term, while Dr Fouad Animashaun joins the board as a commissioner effective December 2025.
Dr Animashaun is an energy economist with extensive experience in Nigeria’s power sector and most recently served as Executive Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission.
President Tinubu charged members of the reconstituted NERC board to deepen and consolidate the ongoing transformation of the power sector, in strict alignment with both the letter and spirit of the Electricity Act, 2023.
