Authorities have identified the man accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk as Tyler James Robinson, a 22-year-old Utah native who had been living with his parents. Robinson was arrested on September 12 after a family member recognised him in surveillance images and encouraged him to turn himself in, effectively ending a nationwide manhunt. According to CBS News, it was Robinson’s father who urged him to surrender and later contacted a family friend who informed the sheriff’s office.

At a Friday press briefing, FBI officials confirmed Robinson’s arrest but declined to discuss his background, political leanings, or possible motive, saying the investigation was ongoing. “We are confident we have the right individual in custody, but we are still working to establish the full picture of who he is and why he acted,” an FBI spokesperson said.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox revealed that investigators interviewed a family member who claimed Robinson had become “more political” in recent years. During a family dinner shortly before the attack, Robinson had allegedly discussed Kirk’s upcoming appearance at Utah Valley University, though he was not enrolled there. Records show Robinson was a third-year electrical apprenticeship student at Dixie Technical College, with prior enrollment at Utah State University in 2021 and concurrent credits at Utah Tech University during high school.

Public records indicate Robinson was registered as a nonpartisan voter, while his parents, Matthew and Amber Robinson, are Republicans. The family, who are Mormon and active in their local church, have lived quietly in Utah, with his father running a kitchen cabinet installation business and his mother working as a social worker.

Investigators disclosed disturbing evidence from shell casings linked to the case, which carried internet trolling inscriptions and references to anti-fascist symbolism. One casing bore the phrase “notices bulges OwO what’s this?”, another read “If you read this, you are gay lmao,” and others contained apparent Antifa references along with lyrics to “Bella Ciao,” an anthem of Italy’s World War II resistance. Authorities further confirmed that Robinson was active on Discord, where investigators uncovered messages about rifle drop points and instructions for concealing the weapon. Discord has since suspended his account for violating its off-platform behavior policy.

The killing has ignited strong reactions across the political spectrum. Turning Point USA, the conservative organisation Kirk founded, described the attack as a devastating act of political violence and vowed to continue his mission. Former President Donald Trump condemned the killing as an assault on free speech and conservative values, demanding the death penalty for Robinson. Governor Cox urged calm and warned against politicising the tragedy until the investigation is complete. Meanwhile, hashtags such as #JusticeForCharlieKirk and #StopPoliticalViolence began trending on social media as conservatives expressed outrage and grief, while progressives stressed that political violence in any form poses a serious threat to democracy.

Robinson remains in custody as prosecutors prepare formal charges. The FBI and local law enforcement are continuing their investigation into his background, motives, and potential affiliations in what many are calling one of the most significant political killings in recent U.S. history.
