Worshipers Killed As Gunmen Attack Catholic Church In Anambra
Tragedy has stricken in Anambra State as many persons are reported killed by gunmen while worshipping in at St. Philips Catholic Church in Ozubulu situated in Ekusigo government area.
The identity of the attackers and their motive have not been established however security operatives are said to have swung into action to unravel the mystery behind the incident that occurred on Sunday.
The state governor, Willie Obiano, has called for calm once he visited the scene of the attack to condole with the parishioners.
Governor Obiano condemned the attack and promised to make sure that the culprits are brought to justice.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Garba Baba Umar, also confirmed the attack to Channels tv.
He said many people were hurt in the attack while a number of the victims died on their way to the hospital.
“This morning at about 0620hrs, we received an information that some armed men invaded St. Philips Catholic church in Ozubulu when the presiding priest was conducting an early morning mass. The assassins came in and started firing and in the process, some people were hurt and were taken to hospital where a number of them were confirmed dead”, Mr Umar said.
“At the moment, at the Nnewi Teaching Hospital, it was confirmed that eight persons were killed and three others died at another hospital which we have not determined but all in all, eleven persons lost their lives during this cowardly act.”
