The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed that 35 persons died as a result of the stampede that happened yesterday at the fun fair that was to hold in the premises of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan. The stampede was the consequence of the overcrowding of the event venue.
In a radio interview monitored this morning, Osifeso Adewale, the Public Relations officer of the state police command, said that seven persons have been arrested. He added that the chief organiser of the fun fair is also with the police to assist in investigations leading to the unfortunate incident. The principal of the school venue is with the Police as well.
Meanwhile, the Oyo State Ministry of Health has declared that there was no request from anyone or organisation for health services required for the event.
The Chairman of the Ibadan branch of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, Ibrahim Lawal, has, during a radio programme, said that, beyond investigation by the police, a commission of inquiry needs to be set up by the state government to unravel the causes of the tragic incident and proffer a long-term recommendation towards preventing any occurrence in the future.
