Ijebu Renew Calls for State Creation

The people of Ijebuland in Ogun State took advantage of the occasion of the Colloquium on the Ijebu, a meeting for the exchange of views on the economic history and culture of the Ijebu, which was part of activities marking the 80th birthday anniversary of His Royal Highness, HRM, Oba Sikiru Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland to unanimously clamour for the creation of an Ijebu State.

The event, which held on Tuesday, May 06, 2014 at the Adeola Odutola Hall, Degun, Ijebu Ode, attracted notable academics, politicians, and traditional rulers who had come to celebrate a proud son of Ijebuland.

With the theme, “The Ijebu – Elements of History, Culture, and Commerce,” the event featured a panel of discussants which include Bilisanmi Awoderu of the faculty of Science Education, Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU, Ogun State; Gbolahan Adebule, former Medical Director, National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos; and Bankole Okuwa, president, Ogun State Chamber of Commerce.

It also featured two lead speakers including Ayo Teriba, CEO, Economic Associates and Tunde Oduwobi, a lecturer from the department of History and Strategic Study, University of Lagos, Akoka.

Awoderu, who expounded the benefits of an Ijebu State to the indigenes of Ogun and Nigerians at large, agrees that “for the purpose of equity, justice and fairness, the Ijebu people deserve a state of their own.”

Adetona, who thanked everyone for the honour shown to him, bemoaned the rate of unemployment in the country and urged government at all levels to give it an urgent attention.
