Lagos Students Shine at 2025 World Robot Olympiad in Singapore, Sweep Top African Robotics Awards

Lagos State has made a remarkable mark on the global stage at the 2025 World Robot Olympiad (WRO) International Final held at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Singapore, from November 26 to 28.

The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has commended its students for their exceptional performance, demonstrating Nigeria’s growing prowess in robotics and STEM education.

Leading a 17-member delegation, Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, oversaw Lagos State’s participation across multiple categories. The 2025 WRO, themed “The Future of Robots”, saw historic participation with 3,300 young innovators from 112 countries and 600 competing teams.

The event provided a global platform for students to showcase innovative robotics solutions addressing key sectors such as agriculture, sustainability, healthcare, accessibility, and space exploration. Nigeria was recognised as one of the highest users of WRO learning platforms for robotics training.

Lagos State’s standout achievements include:

New Era Senior High School, Surulere (Senior Category, Robo Mission): First in Africa, demonstrating strong engineering concepts, teamwork, and mission execution. Team members: Adigun Mariam Ideraoluwa, Saliu Ameerat Odunola, and Mr. Akingbade Olalekan Joseph (Teacher/Coach).

Okesuna Junior Secondary School, Lagos Island (Junior Category, SMART GUARD BOT): Second in Africa, with an AI-powered robot designed for electrical fault detection. Team members: Taiwo Oluwasemilore Elizabeth (13), Adegboye Esther Idunnu (15), and Mrs. Ogundipe Dorcas Oluwafemi (Teacher/Coach).

Government Technical College, Ikotun (Senior Category, Spaar & Lego-Based Assistant Robot): Third in Africa, presenting a solar-powered AI agricultural robot promoting precision farming and aligning with SDGs 2, 7, 9, and 13. Team members: Izahben Goodluck Chukwuka, Olawoye Solomon Moyinoluwa, and Mr. Olasupo Kolawole Olalekan (Teacher/Coach).

New Era Girls Junior Secondary School, Surulere (Robo Era Team, Junior): Second in Africa, demonstrating strong technical proficiency and teamwork. Team members: Ishaq Habeebat Tejumola (12), Adigun Khadijat Oluwademilade (13), and Mr. Ogundeyi Adewale Oluwabusayo (Teacher/Coach).



The students’ innovations addressed pressing real-world challenges including electrical safety, sustainable agriculture, and climate-smart technology, reflecting Lagos State’s commitment to advancing STEM education and nurturing homegrown talent.

The Ministry emphasised that the outstanding performance of Lagos State teams underscores Nigeria’s rising capacity in global robotics and the positive impact of strategic investments in STEM education.

The World Robot Olympiad remains a premier global competition promoting robotics, science, and technology education among young innovators, providing a critical launchpad for the next generation of engineers, technologists, and problem-solvers.
