Football erupted into chaos at the Katsina United vs Barau FC match at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium when fans of Katsina United allegedly attacked Barau’s striker Nana Abraham following his 68th-minute equaliser. A video circulating online shows Nana clutching his neck before collapsing to the turf, igniting speculation he was slashed by supporters.

Despite the uproar, Katsina United has publicly denied the allegations, stating Nana was “acting a script” and no player was contacted by anyone at close range according to the footage. Though the video does not clearly show a throat slitting, numerous missiles thrown by fans can be seen hitting the field.

Further fueling tension, Barau FC’s team bus was vandalised amid the turmoil. Independent journalists at the scene attempted to interview Nana, but were blocked by his teammates, leaving the incident unclear. Neither the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), Barau FC nor Katsina United have issued official statements. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.

Match timeline:

68’ – Orji Kalu scores for Barau FC.
69’ – Unrest begins.
70’ – Nana Abraham collapses; play is paused.
71’ – Nana substituted out.
72’ – Game resumes.
96’ (full-time) – Match ends 1-1.

With the draw, Katsina United maintain 7th place with 17 points from 13 games. Barau FC remain bottom of the table at 18th with 10 points from 13 matches.

This incident echoes a similar event just weeks ago, when Kano Pillars were fined ₦9.5 million for a supporter rampage that injured officials and players of Shooting Stars.

In a post-match statement, Nana addressed the media:

“My throat was not slaughtered. As we scored, KU fans started throwing objects at us. One hit my chest and another my neck.”

The NPFL now faces mounting pressure to investigate the incident, review stadium security protocols and clamp down on fan violence to protect player safety and the league’s reputation.
