Suleiman Abba, the Inspector-General of Police, has re-affirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to ensure a hitch free gubernatorial and State House of Assembly polls on Saturday, April 11.
In a statement signed by Emmanuel Ojukwu, Force Public Relations Officer, Abba warned all troublemakers who may attempt to foment trouble before, during and after the elections to have a rethink or get prepared to face the unpleasant consequences.
The Police High Command has further identified flash points in some geopolitical zones, and devised strategies to address all issues of safety and security as concerns the election.
The IGP assured that the Force will continue to encourage a level playing ground to all and advised Nigerians to vote and maintain tranquility for the smooth running of the election.
He also called on party leaders to implore their supporters to shun any act of violence or thuggery, as the full weight of the law will rest on troublemakers.
Meanwhile, the IGP in another statement tasked officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to exercise a high sense of professionalism in their conduct on election duties as laid down in the Police Regulations and the Standard Operational Guidelines.
He equally directed the police to adopt an attitude of complete neutrality and impartiality in discharging their duties in connection with the election.
While noting that the Police are the leading law enforcement agency, the IGP enjoined them to take charge of security at Polling Units and Collation Centres and directed that all officers involved in election duties must be firm, fair and approachable to all parties.
