Erstwhile political adviser to Senator Adams Oshiomhole, immediate past governor of Edo State, and chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) Charles Idahosa, has walked away from the party. Idahosa, a member of the PDP’s Board of Trustees, (BoT) also resigned his membership of the governing body of the party on Monday.

Announcing his decision to quit the PDP in a letter titled “Letter of Resignation” which was addressed to the Chairman of his Ehor Ward 1 in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of Edo State and copied to the Chairman, BoT of the PDP, South-South National Vice Chairman, the State Chairman, and Uhunmwonde Local Government Chairman of the party, Idahosa said after careful consideration, he believed it was time for him “to pursue new paths and opportunities beyond the party’s confines”. He was however silent on where he would be pitching his tent with the state presently in a political frenzy ahead of the September 21, 2024 governorship election.

His resignation came on the heels of a gale of defections that had hit the ruling PDP in the state following the exit of eight former local government council chairmen from the party to the All-Progressives Congress (APC).

The defectors included John Osi Akhigbe, former Etsako Central Local Government chairman; Dr. Josie Ogedegbe, Igueben; Frank Ilaboya, Owan West; Andrew Osigwe, Owan East; Napoleon Agbama, Uhunmwonde; Scott Ogbemudia, Ovia Northeast; Austin Okoibhole, Esan Northeast; and Mrs. Ruth Osahor, Esan West.

In his letter of resignation, Idahosa, a former member of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, said, “I trust this letter finds you well. I am reaching out to formally announce my decision to resign from both the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and my role as a member of the Board of Trustees (BOT). As a representative of the South South Nigerian region, this decision comes after considerable contemplation and reflection on my personal and political journey.

“Throughout my tenure within the People’s Democratic Party, I have been privileged to contribute to its vision and mission. However, after careful consideration, I believe it is time for me to pursue new paths and opportunities beyond the party’s confines.

“I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the PDP community for their unwavering support and camaraderie during my time of service. I remain committed to upholding the values and principles that have guided my political engagement thus far. I look forward to new avenues of growth and contribution, and I extend my best wishes to the People’s Democratic Party as it continues its important work”.

Idahosa had in solidarity with Governor Obaseki when he was denied a second-term ticket by the then ruling APC in the state, had defected with him to the PDP when he was offered the ticket. They however soon fell apart as a result of the way the old PDP members who supported him were treated. The duo had also disagreed on the perceived imposition of a candidate for the upcoming governorship election in the state by the governor.
