Chika Amalaha, Nigeria’s suspended weightlifter at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow has failed a B sample drug test.

It will be recalled that Amalaha, who won gold in the women’s 53kg category on Friday, July 25, had earlier tested positive to an A sample test which revealed traces of diuretics and masking agents.

While confirming that the follow-up examination corroborated the initial findings, Mike Hooper, Chief Executive, Commonwealth Games Federation, stressed that a robust process will be followed to ensure fairness to all that is concerned.

“I can report that the analysis on the Nigerian weightlifting Chika Amalaha’s B sample has been completed, and this has confirmed the analysis and finding of the A result. I can’t and won’t speculate on what the outcome might be. We have a robust process in place that must be followed to ensure fairness to all,” Hooper said.

16-year-old Amalaha, who was the first athlete to fail a drug test at the Games, faces a two-year ban as a first-time doping offender.
