A shocking case of alleged medical negligence has sparked outrage in Edo State after a 20-month-old baby was reportedly infected with HIV during a blood transfusion at Safebliss Medical Center, Benin City.

The incident, which occurred in February, began when the child was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with low blood levels. The father paid ₦40,000 for two rounds of transfusions. Shortly after discharge, the baby’s health worsened, and tests later confirmed he had contracted HIV.

The distraught parents claimed the hospital ignored their complaints until Sahara Reporters amplified the story, drawing the attention of Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole. During a mediation meeting, the commissioner dismissed the hospital’s defense that the infection may have originated from a pharmacy, noting that “pharmacies do not handle transfusions; they only dispense drugs.”

Dr. Oshiomhole proposed three options for accountability:

  1. Lifetime employment for the parents to help them cater for the child.
  2. Full medical coverage for the child.
  3. ₦700,000 compensation, warning that a court case could lead to jail time for the hospital’s management.

Following public outcry and state investigations, reports confirm that the clinic has since been sealed by authorities.

This heartbreaking case has raised serious questions about medical safety standards, blood screening practices, and accountability in Nigeria’s healthcare system.
