No Change To African Nations Cup Despite Ebola – CAF

The Confederation of African Football, CAF on Saturday said there would be no change to its plan to hold the 2015 African Nations Cup, AFCON in Morocco.

This follows a Moroccan Health Ministry’s request on Friday, appealing to CAF to postpone the tournament due to commence on Saturday, January 18, 2015 over the outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease, EVD in Africa.

In a statement issued on Saturday, CAF said it would send a delegation to the Moroccan government next month to discuss the issue.

“CAF acknowledges this request and confirms it will make no changes to its calendar of scheduled competitions. We have taken into account the recommendations of the World Health Organization and various medical experts. It should be noted that since the first edition in 1957 no African Cup of Nations has ever been postponed or deferred,” the statement read.

Although there are no cases of the outbreak in the North African country, the government has ordered an investigation into the possibility of the virus being spread by the tournament.
