A magistrate court in Port Harcourt has remanded in a correctional centre the dismissed inspector of police, Uba Christian, who killed the tricycle driver, Edmund Okechukwu two weeks ago at Rukpokwu, near Port Harcourt.
The magistrate, A.O. Amadi-Nnah, remanded the dismissed police officer after declining jurisdiction in the case. Christian was charged for killing Okechukwu by firing him on the left side of his jaw with an AK47 rifle.
Meanwhile, drivers on the UST – Ada George – Choba axis barricaded the road at Chinda junction on Tuesday after policemen beat up a driver and vandalized his bus.
Drivers’ Welfare Chairman, Choba unit Bestman Chile, said a policeman had demanded a bribe from the driver and when the driver refused to pay he and his colleagues pounced on the driver, beat him up and vandalised his vehicle.
“We are drivers we cannot fight the police. We will block the road until the police come to repair the vehicle,” Chile said.
Drivers along that route have also accused a certain policewoman known as Mama Gee of extorting and harassing drivers.
The drivers said there is no bus stop along Ada George road but once a bus drops a passenger policemen would appear and harass the driver. They said Mama Gee collects between N3,000 and N4,000 for this offence. “It is too much for the police. Let the government come and look into this issue,” one of the drivers said.
