Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health concerns. His resignation was formally conveyed in a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu has accepted the minister’s resignation and expressed gratitude for his dedication and service to the nation, especially during a period of heightened security challenges.

Badaru Abubakar, 63, previously served as a two-term governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before being appointed Defence Minister on August 21, 2023.

His exit comes at a critical time, just days after President Tinubu declared a national security emergency, signaling major reforms and intensified counter-terrorism efforts across the country.

The presidency is expected to announce a successor soon, with President Tinubu likely to forward a new nominee to the Senate later this week.
