Edo State has witnessed an alarming surge in coronavirus infections with 82 new cases and three deaths recorded in 72 hours. Thirty-one persons also recovered from the infection.

The State COVID-19 Incident Manager, Dr. Andrew Obi, disclosed this during a meeting of the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC), chaired by the state governor, Godwin Obaseki.

Obi said “We have in the last 72 hours recorded 82 new coronavirus cases and three new deaths. There were 31 recoveries, while the active cases currently stand at 207.”

He reiterated the state government’s advice to residents to adhere to the precautionary health and safety protocols so as to guard against the spread of the virus, adding that the isolation and treatment centres in the state are actively attending to confirmed cases of the virus in the state.

According to Obi, “In the last seven days, we have collected 1,200 samples from the various screening and testing centres across the state. This disease surveillance mechanism was set up during the first wave of the pandemic and we are doing well to ensure that they are adequately supplied with reagents and other materials to ensure quick detection of cases.

“In the last seven days, we have had 176 confirmed cases as well. We have high case positivity rates in Esan West, Esan Central Local Government Areas (LGAs) cases in the past 7 days. There have also been 82 recoveries over the past seven days”.

Warning that there was need for Edo residents to be cautious, Obi said it was worrisome that confirmed cases were rising rapidly by the day. He noted that the state had recorded 382 confirmed cases from December 1 when the state started tracking the second wave of the pandemic.
