Tragedy was averted on Saturday at the NNPC (Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation) filling station at Alagbole Akute, the filling station which is located between Ajayi Farm bus stop and Oremeji bus stop, when a petrol tanker caught fire while discharging PMS (premium motor spirit) into the underground storage tanks.

TELL gathered that the fire started at around 7.00 am, while the tanker was discharging its content into one of the storage tanks, an eye witness said that if not for the courageous act of the tanker driver who jumped into the vehicle after it caught fire and drove it out of the premises of the NNPC filling station to the main road, there would have been crisis. However, in the process, the driver ran into the electric pole in front of the filling station.

The filling station would have been razed, if not for the timely intervention of the passersby and residents in the area who took it upon themselves to dose the fire using fire extinguisers especially people from The Fathers House Church at Ajayi Farm. It would have been another story entirely, but the efforts of those people were complemented by the Federal Fire Service, which later came to completely quench the fire.
By 2.00pm the completely burnt fuel tanker was evacuated away to ease traffic flow by LASEMA.
