Award-winning Nigerian filmmaker Kemi Adetiba is back — and this time, she’s not holding back. Her newest creation, “To Kill a Monkey,” an eight-part crime thriller series, is set to premiere globally on Netflix on July 18, 2025, and the buzz is deafening.

Known for her groundbreaking political epic King of Boys, Adetiba shifts gears into darker, more dangerous territory exploring the morally grey world of cybercrime, survival, and the thin line between desperation and destruction.

At the heart of the story is Efemini, played by rising star William Benson a struggling man caught in the chokehold of Nigeria’s brutal economic realities. When a charming but dangerous old friend (played by Bucci Franklin) resurfaces, Efemini is dragged into a criminal underworld where every move could be his last.

From the first pulse-pounding trailer released on June 26, audiences were gripped. Stylized shots, raw performances, and a haunting soundtrack set the tone for what many are already calling Kemi Adetiba’s boldest work yet.

Crafted under her Kemi Adetiba Visuals banner, Adetiba wrote, directed, and produced the series, delivering a cinematic experience that blends Nollywood realism with Hollywood-level tension.

The star-studded cast features Stella Damasus, Chidi Mokeme, Bimbo Akintola, Ireti Doyle, Lilian Afegbai, Michael O. Ejoor, and Sunshine Rosman each bringing depth and grit to a story that mirrors the very real pressures of modern survival.

Speaking about the project, Adetiba shared:

“I wanted to challenge myself to tell a different kind of story — one that’s raw, urgent, and pushes the boundaries of what Nigerian television can be.”

In a genre often underrepresented in African cinema, To Kill a Monkey dives headfirst into the world of hacking, scamming, family pressure, and fractured masculinity all wrapped in a tense, stylish thriller that feels as local as it is international.

Will Efemini escape the trap? Or will the choices he makes kill more than just the monkey?

The answers begin streaming July 18, 2025, only on Netflix.
