A 25-year-old lady, Rose Bulus of Maganji Gari Kaduna State has dragged her father, Josiah before a Sharia court for stopping her from marrying her suitor.
Miss Bulus told the court that her father had refused to allow her marry the man she choose because she had converted to Islam in order to marry the man.
“I want the court to compel my father to allow me to marry the man I love and if he refuses, the court should do the needful,” she told the court. However, Josiah told the court that he did not have any record of his daughter having a relationship with any man and was surprised to see a court sermon.
He also told the court that the supposed suitor had never visited him to ask for the hand of his daughter in marriage.
But Malam Dahiru Lawal, the presiding judge, after listening to both parties, admonished that even though marriage is a union between a man and a woman, parent’s consent is equally needed before the union takes place. He subsequently ordered the suitor and his family members to appear in the court at the next adjourned date in March.
