American celebrity magazine; PEOPLE has named, black British actor Idris Elba, as the sexiest man alive.
Whatever this means, Idris Elba has joined previous winners, including fellow movie stars like Brad Pitt, Denzel Washington, and American country singer Blake Shelton to win the 33rd edition of the honour.
The 46-year-old British actor who starred and had major roles in movies like, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Avengers and Dark Tower was announced on Monday’s ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ as this year’s winner.
Reacting to the news, Elba said: “I was like, ‘Come on, no way. Really?’ Looked in the mirror, I checked myself out. “I was like, ‘Yeah, you are kind of sexy today’. But to be honest, it was just a nice feeling. It was a nice surprise, an ego boost for sure.”
Also, on Twitter, Elba expressed how honoured he was for the recognition, before urging fans to vote in Tuesday’s midterm elections in USA.
He also tweeted: “Who’d have thought it! Thank you, people & all the fans, for naming me #SexiestManAlive.”
Elba, who was among the favourites to take over from Daniel Craig as James Bond before ruling himself out earlier this year, said he endured an awkward stage while growing up, he revealed how he moved on from being picked on, a lot of times while growing up because of his lanky stature and his name, to being the coolest kid in the block when he started growing muscles and moustache.
The annual feature, the “Sexiest Man Alive” is billed as a benchmark of male attractiveness and typically includes only famous people and celebrities. It is determined using a procedure similar to the procedure used for Time’s Person of the Year.
As of 2016, John F. Kennedy, Jr. and Patrick Swayze were the only winners to have died since winning. Kennedy, Adam Levine, David Beckham and Blake Shelton are the only non-actors to have won the award.
Elba, who is born to Sierra Leonean parents, is engaged to Sabrina Dhowre and has two children- a 16-year-old daughter, Isan, and a 4-year-old son, Winston.
Elba has been the host of the two recent editions of the FIFA BEST awards, since its return, both in 2017 and 2018. During the 2017 edition, he took a selfie of the FIFA Team of the Year, which includes the first eleven best players in the world for that year.
