Suleiman Abba, Inspector General of Police, has ordered that suspected thugs arrested during political campaigns across the country be prosecuted immediately.
In a press release signed by Emmanuel Ojukwu, spokesperson of the Nigerian Police Force, Abba maintained that there would be no sacred cows, as everyone found guilty of the offence will be duly punished.
“Some suspects have been arrested in connection with perpetration of violence during political campaigns at different locations contrary to Section 227 of the 1999 constitution (as amended) and sections 94 and 95 of the Electoral Act. The IGP has therefore ordered their immediate prosecution in the court of law no matter their status in the society,” the statement partly read.
The statement recalled that the Inspector-General of Police had earlier directed Zonal Assistant Inspectors General, AIGs and State Commissioners of Police to take severe measures against political thugs and miscreants who revel in unleashing mayhem on supporters and actors of opposing political parties in the on-going political campaigns.
The Police boss emphasised that the Nigeria Police will not condone any act of hooliganism from any quarters and advised politicians to adhere strictly to stipulated rules and regulations.
He also called on members of the public to support the Police by promptly reporting any criminal act in their areas at the nearest police station. He assured Nigerians that their safety would be highly safeguarded before, during and after the elections.Follow Us on Social Media
