Lai Mohammed, the Interim National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC has advised President Goodluck Jonathan to stop the Boko Haram insurgency as a conspiracy against his administration or the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Mohammed said this at the 4th annual students’ week lecture of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, NIJ on Wednesday, June 4 at the Lateef Jakande auditorium, Ogba Lagos.
Speaking on the topic of the lecture titled, the role of the media, youths and opposition in sustaining and deepening Nigerian democracy, Mohammed, who was the lead speaker said Jonathan and PDP should see the Boko Haram sect as an enemy of the entire world in order to be able to forge a united front against the group.
Speaking further, he said APC, as a party believes that only a non-partisan approach can help the country forge a common front against Boko Haram. “This is why we offered our hand of support to the government. Which is yet to be accepted,” he said.
The APC publicity secretary said he unequivocally submits that democracy is imperiled without a virile opposition that is robust, responsible and credible.
“Opposition is a sine qua non to an enduring democracy and a ruling party or government can only wish the opposition away at its own peril,” Mohammed said.
The lecture topic according to the organizers was to reinforce the role of the media, youths and the opposition on their responsibility of making a democratic government accountable to the people.
Mathew Ojebola, president of the student union government of the institution, said the objective of the discussion was to “ensure that everything that needs to be implemented in order to have a better Nigeria is done. And to have this, the democratic setting such as we have in Nigeria, needs the contributions of the media, youths and the opposition.”
