The 2026 All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries in Lagos State have ended in dramatic fashion, producing crushing victories, shocking political upsets, and renewed debate over the influence of party power brokers ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The biggest shock of the primaries came from Surulere Constituency 1, where former Special Adviser on Housing Barakat Odunuga-Bakare overwhelmingly defeated Nollywood actor-turned-lawmaker Desmond Elliot in what many observers are calling one of the most humiliating losses in recent Lagos political history.
Official results showed Odunuga-Bakare polling a staggering 11,385 votes, while Elliot managed just 270 votes.
The landslide victory immediately sparked widespread reactions across social media and political circles, with many linking Odunuga-Bakare’s success to her strong backing from influential APC leaders, including Femi Gbajabiamila.
Despite the crushing margin, Desmond Elliot rejected suggestions that he had conceded defeat, alleging intimidation and irregularities in parts of the primary process.

Mixed Reactions Trail Primaries
The outcomes of the primaries have triggered intense reactions across Lagos State.
While APC loyalists described the results as evidence of strong party unity and strategic consolidation ahead of the 2027 elections, critics argued that the contests once again exposed the dominance of political godfathers within the Lagos APC.
Political analysts say the crushing defeat suffered by Desmond Elliot has become the defining story of the primaries, with many Nigerians debating whether the outcome reflects genuine grassroots rejection or internal party realignment driven by elite interests.
The primaries have also intensified conversations around internal democracy, candidate imposition, and the future direction of the ruling party in Lagos.
Observers believe managing dissatisfied aspirants and preventing post-primary divisions will be critical for the APC as preparations intensify for the next general elections.
The Lagos APC is expected to formally ratify the primary results in the coming days.
