Lagosians are up in arms, dragging Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, for what they call gross incompetence after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu admitted that the ongoing traffic crisis could last for two months.

The gridlock, which turned Lagos into a commuter’s nightmare, saw thousands of motorists and passengers trapped on Ozumba Mbadiwe, Adeola Odeku, Ikoyi, and Victoria Island until 5 a.m. Frustration boiled over as Lagos residents vented online, questioning the planning—or lack thereof—that led to the chaos.

In an attempt to control the damage, Umahi swiftly ordered the reopening of the Independence Bridge to ease the congestion. However, Sanwo-Olu later announced that halting construction was not an option, stating that the bridge had been “managed” for three years and needed urgent repairs.

On the ground, reports suggest that reopening the road is nearly impossible at the moment, as the asphalt has already been deeply excavated. The only way out? Authorities would need to prioritize the repair and refill the section by evening—an outcome many commuters find highly unlikely.

Now, Nigerians beyond Lagos are questioning whether Umahi and his team conducted any proper research or traffic impact assessments before starting the project. Many are drawing parallels with the controversial coastal highway project, which faced backlash for reportedly lacking an environmental and impact study.

As tempers flare and traffic remains a disaster, the real question remains: Will the government act fast enough to fix this mess, or are Lagosians in for a two-month traffic nightmare?
