Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have uncovered and dismantled a network of underground caves and tunnels in Kano State allegedly used as secret warehouses for hard drugs in what authorities describe as a major breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking.

The dramatic operation, carried out after weeks of intelligence gathering, exposed an elaborate subterranean system reportedly designed to help drug syndicates evade security agencies while storing, trading, and distributing illicit substances across parts of Nigeria and beyond.

According to NDLEA officials, the hidden facilities were carefully integrated into the local terrain, allowing traffickers to conceal large quantities of drugs away from public view and law enforcement surveillance.

Sources familiar with the operation disclosed that NDLEA operatives stormed multiple suspected hideouts in Kano and discovered interconnected underground passages believed to have been actively used by drug dealers for secret movement and storage operations.

Authorities said the tunnels linked different points within the area, making it easier for traffickers to transport substances discreetly while avoiding detection.

During the raid, officers reportedly dismantled the underground structures to prevent further criminal use. Although the exact quantity and type of drugs recovered have yet to be officially disclosed, investigators confirmed that the locations served as active hubs for both storage and distribution activities.

Security experts say the discovery highlights the increasing sophistication of drug trafficking networks operating in northern Nigeria.

The operation forms part of the NDLEA’s intensified nationwide offensive against drug cartels and organized trafficking networks.

In recent months, the agency has expanded its focus beyond street-level dealers to target the logistics systems, warehouses, and supply chains sustaining the illegal narcotics trade.

NDLEA leadership has repeatedly warned that criminal syndicates will no longer find refuge in hidden camps, forests, abandoned buildings, or underground facilities as the agency deploys intelligence-driven operations and modern surveillance strategies.

Residents in Kano have reacted with shock following reports of the underground drug tunnels, with many expressing concern over the scale of the operation allegedly being conducted beneath communities.

Community leaders and residents also welcomed the crackdown, saying they hope it will help reduce the spread of hard drugs among youths and curb rising criminal activities linked to substance abuse.

Kano remains one of northern Nigeria’s major commercial centers, and security analysts warn that traffickers often exploit densely populated trading hubs to move illegal substances across regional routes.

Authorities say investigations are continuing to identify and apprehend the masterminds behind the underground network.

The NDLEA has also urged members of the public to provide credible information on suspicious activities, hidden warehouses, and drug trafficking operations within their communities.

Officials insist the latest discovery sends a strong warning that no criminal hideout — whether above ground or beneath it — will remain beyond the reach of law enforcement agencies.
